It’s usually written in free verse—lines shaped by breath, pressure, and sound rather than set meters. The poems still care about music, but they aren’t trying to follow inherited rules. They’re trying to tell the truth in language that fits the lives being described.

What I Write About: ‘Struggle and Failure and Broken Lives’

When asked to describe my chapbook Familiar History, my teacher Corrinne Clegg Hales said the poems “de-romanticize the landscape and mythology of the American West, revealing a world defined largely by struggle and failure and broken lives.” I think that’s right.

I was raised in a poor, rural part of northern Nevada. The West I knew didn’t look like the movies. It wasn’t clean or heroic. People worked hard, drank hard, fought hard, and got hurt. Families broke down. Money ran out. The land didn’t offer much forgiveness.

Growing up, I watched the same Westerns everyone else did, men like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood who never seemed to bleed, no matter what they faced. But in the town where I was born, Fallon, Nevada, people did bleed. Often it was for nothing. The version of the American Dream we were promised never really showed up.

That gap, between the stories we’re told and the lives people actually live, is where my poems begin.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Footer Section” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_color=”#22262d” custom_padding=”100px||100px|” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3,1_3,1_3″ custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_color=”#bcaca0″ custom_margin=”-10%|||” custom_padding=”70px|3%|70px|3%” custom_padding_tablet=”” custom_padding_phone=”” border_radii=”on|10px|10px|10px|10px” box_shadow_style=”preset2″ box_shadow_horizontal=”0px” box_shadow_vertical=”35px” box_shadow_blur=”65px” box_shadow_color=”rgba(188,163,146,0.1)” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”Contact Me” url=”https://www.guiseppegetto.com/poetry/contact/” use_icon=”on” font_icon=”||divi||400″ icon_color=”#ffffff” image_icon_background_color=”rgba(189,173,160,0)” image_icon_width=”32px” admin_label=”Contact Manager” _builder_version=”4.16″ header_font=”Abhaya Libre|700|||||||” header_text_color=”#ffffff” header_font_size=”24px” header_line_height=”1.2em” body_font=”Nunito||||||||” body_text_color=”#ffffff” body_font_size=”18px” image_icon_custom_padding=”25px|25px|25px|25px|false|false” text_orientation=”center” animation=”off” border_radii_image=”on|100%|100%|100%|100%” border_width_all_image=”3px” border_color_all_image=”#ffffff” icon_font_size=”32px” use_circle=”on” use_circle_border=”on” circle_border_color=”#ffffff” circle_color=”rgba(189,173,160,0)” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” image_icon_background_color__sticky_enabled=”#7EBEC5″ image_icon_background_color__sticky=”#7EBEC5″][/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

My Published WorkMy poems can be found in my chapbook Familiar History, available from Finishing Line Press. Poets today largely eschew the rhyming poetry many of us learn about in school for a style called free verse. Free verse typically doesn't rhyme and though it often contains a certain musicality, it tends to stay away from set rhythms like iambic pentameter (the meter popularized by William Shakespeare).

Central Themes: 'Struggle and Failure and Broken Lives'

Many times our teachers and mentors see our work better than we can ourselves. When asked to provide a blurb for my first book, Familiar History, Corrinne Cleggs Hales, my mentor and poetry teacher from my M.F.A. program, said the book: "expertly de-romanticizes the landscape and mythology of the American west, revealing a world defined largely by struggle and failure and broken lives."

I think this accurately describes my work much better than I ever could. The world represented in my poetry is a dark one. I was raised in an impoverished, rural area of Northern Nevada and the struggles of a difficult, isolated childhood have colored much of how I see the American West. Like many from this region, I grew up watching superhuman characters brought to life by Clint Eastwood and John Wayne who could take on the entire world without ever shedding a single drop of blood.

This was not the reality of the small farming town of Fallon, NV I was born in. There, people did shed blood, often in the vain hope of achieving an American Dream that had seemed to skip over their entire region and everyone they held dear.
["post-10","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
