Based in Winchester, Virginia, <em>The Sow&#8217;s Ear Poetry Review<\/em> has been publishing since 1989.<\/p>\n<h3>What Inspired This Poem that Features a Metaphor for Mental Illness<\/h3>\n<p>As I mention in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/guiseppegetto.com\/poetry\/my-story\/\">my story of how I became a poet<\/a>, much of my work stems from\u00a0my experiences growing up\u00a0in\u00a0rural\u00a0NV surrounded by\u00a0some very\u00a0dysfunctional individuals. Was it all the nuclear fallout\u00a0that littered the landscapes of the American\u00a0Southwest that bread so much\u00a0insanity? Perhaps.<\/p>\n<p>Like many kids raised by crazy people, I was frequently diagnosed with a variety of disorders by a parade of mental health professionals who were sympathetic to the claims of my caretakers. To date, I have been diagnosed with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Borderline Personality Disorder<\/li>\n<li>Bipolar Disorder<\/li>\n<li>Clinical Depression<\/li>\n<li>Generalized Anxiety Disorder<\/li>\n<li>Cyclothemia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As it would turn out, none of these diagnoses would end up being accurate. I was fortunate to find some better-prepared therapists later in life who would help me understand that I was being cast as the problem in order to make my caretakers feel better about their own miserable lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Disorder&#8221; is a tour of my own mental landscape through the lens of being labeled crazy by everyone around me. It features a metaphor for mental\u00a0illness in the\u00a0form of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shmoop.com\/literature-glossary\/conceit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conceit<\/a>. A conceit is an extended metaphor where two unlike things\u00a0are\u00a0compared. One of the most famous\u00a0poems\u00a0featuring a conceit is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/46467\/the-flea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Flea by John Donne<\/a>.
